How much homeowners insurance do I get?
It is recommended to have enough coverage to cover the structure of the home, any personal belongings, cost of potential living expenses if home is damaged and liability.
Structure of Home
This is one of the more important coverages that you need to consider. You will need enough insurance to pay for the cost of rebuilding the home at the current construction cost. If you bought your home over 10 years ago, you may want to check to make sure your home is covered for the cost of current construction. A lot of times, this is not the case since construction cost and inflation have caused the cost to rebuild a home to go up.
Most banks will only require that you have enough to cover the amount of loan you are borrowing from the bank. Even if the mortgage is paid off, don't cancel the homeowners insurance policy.
Realize that standard homeowners insurance policy will not cover floods, earthquakes or any damage caused by not maintaining your property.

Personal Belongings
The majority of homeowners insurance policies will cover personal items for up to 50 to 75 % of the insured amount for your home. There are some limitations that usually appear on the Declarations Page.
The first thing to do is to conduct yearly home inventory and create a detailed list of everything you own and the replacement cost. Having a video camera and a digital camera will always make it easier during the claim process should you need to file any claims in case of fire, theft or other disasters. If the total amount is over the insured limits, you should contact your insurance agent and discuss your options.
You will have the choice of insuring for actual cash value or replacement cost up to the limit of your policy. For example, if a fire destorys a 15 year old TV, having a replacement cost policy would mean the insurance company would replace the TV with a new one. If you had actual cash value policy, the homeowners insurance policy would only cover a percentage of the TV because of the depreciation of the TV. Insurance companies will have a lot of different policies relating to expensive items such as jewelry or old antiques of value.
Cost of Potential Living Expenses If Home is Damaged
This section would cover any costs you incur if you are forced to temporarily live elsewhere due to some insured disaster. Homeowners insurance companies will have different policies in how much living expenses get covered. Again, this is best understood by talking with an insurance agent.
